Middle Mile

Middle Mile Banner Image

The middle mile refers to the segment of the network that connects the core network infrastructure (like data centers or central offices) to the local points of presence, often located in neighborhoods or business districts. This part of the network handles the transportation of data between regional or central network hubs and the points that are closer to the end-users. Middle mile networks are responsible for moving data across longer distances and typically have higher capacity and reliability compared to the last mile. In terms of physical infrastructure, middle mile networks might involve high-capacity fiber-optic cables, microwave links, and other high-speed connections that transport data between major locations. They ensure efficient data transfer over longer distances before passing it to the last mile network, which directly serves individual customers.
